A city of countless experiences

A city of countless experiences

Miskolc's cultural heritage is far richer and more diverse than you might initially think. For centuries, the city has been a key centre of intellectual and artistic life in the region, where nationally significant creators, scholars, and theatre figures have left a lasting legacy. During our thematic museum walk, we don’t just visit exhibitions: through stories, artworks, and remarkable human destinies, we uncover a lesser-known side of Miskolc. Starting from the elegant buildings of the city centre, we journey through the worlds of visual arts, theatre, and local history, culminating in one of the city's most significant museum collections.

Where art found a home: the Petró House and the Miskolc Gallery

Where art found a home: the Petró House and the Miskolc Gallery

The first stop on our walk is the Petró House, one of the special locations of Miskolc's visual arts heritage. The building's name honours the memory of Sándor Petró, an art collector whose passionate work played a significant role in enriching the city's artistic treasures. The Petró House is not just a historic building: it also stands as a tribute to the Miskolc bourgeoisie's support for the arts, the passion for collecting, and the creation of cultural value.

From here, we head to the Miskolc Gallery, where we explore another chapter of the city's artistic life. The Miskolc Gallery – a meeting place for visual arts. Miskolc's traditions in visual arts extend far beyond the city's borders. The exhibitions at the Miskolc Gallery offer an opportunity to get a closer look at various periods, creators, and movements of Hungarian art. The artworks in the gallery's halls provide not only aesthetic pleasure but also tell stories of the era in which they were created, the thoughts of their creators, and how the world has changed over the centuries. During our walk, we also seek to answer what role Miskolc has played and continues to play in Hungarian visual arts.

Theatre Museum: behind the scenes and legends

Theatre Museum: behind the scenes and legends

Few people know that Miskolc is one of the most important cities in the history of Hungarian theatre. In 1823, the first permanent Hungarian-language theatre in the territory of present-day Hungary opened here, marking a milestone in the country’s theatre history. The Miskolc Theatre Museum invites you on a unique journey through time: legendary actors, old performances, theatrical costumes, posters, and personal memorabilia bring the world of the stage to life. Through figures like Róza Széppataki Dériné and other key personalities of Hungarian theatre, an era emerges when theatre was not just entertainment but also one of the most important tools for preserving the Hungarian language and culture. Within the museum's walls, the history of theatre becomes a series of human stories: tales of success, struggles, passion, and dedication to the stage.

A sweet detour – coffee and cake at Desszertem

After so much cultural immersion, it’s time for a little gastronomic indulgence! Our next stop is the city centre’s beloved patisserie, Desszertem, where we can relax with a delicious coffee and a special cake. The carefully crafted desserts and the delightful coffeehouse atmosphere provide the perfect opportunity to share our experiences so far. After all, a good city walk is not just about the sights but also about the time spent together, the conversations, and the small joys.

Herman Ottó Museum – Miskolc’s past and artistic treasures

Herman Ottó Museum – Miskolc’s past and artistic treasures

The final stop of our walk is the Herman Ottó Museum on Görgey Artúr Street, one of the most significant museum institutions in northeastern Hungary. Here, three different worlds unfold before us, and we explore in detail the exhibition that currently garners the most interest.

What was Miskolc like a hundred or even two hundred years ago? How did the locals live, work, and entertain themselves? What buildings, streets, and urban customs shaped daily life? The Miskolc Anno exhibition guides us into the world of the city's past and helps us understand how this former trading town became a significant industrial and cultural centre. Through the stories of old Miskolc, the city we know today gains new meaning.

Herman Ottó – the last Hungarian polymath

Herman Ottó – the last Hungarian polymath

Scientist, ethnographer, archaeologist, writer, and politician – Herman Ottó was one of the most versatile figures in Hungarian scientific history. His life was closely tied to Miskolc and the Bükk region. The exhibition dedicated to him brings visitors closer not only to his scientific achievements but also to his exceptional personality, curiosity, and passion for nature.

The Herman Ottó Museum’s Art Gallery preserves significant works of Hungarian visual art. Its collection offers an opportunity to trace changes in artistic taste, representation, and thought through various periods of painting. The gallery also serves as a reminder that one doesn’t need to travel to the capital for outstanding artistic experiences: Miskolc holds remarkable cultural treasures of its own.
